2025 NHRI Undergraduate Student Research Program

Objectives

To foster and inspire young potential talents to join the biomedical and public health research, we welcome and encourage undergraduate students to participate in the 2025 NHRI Undergraduate Student Research Program.

Eligibility Requirement

Domestic and overseas undergraduate students (who must remain enrolled during the fellowship period) who have obtained the approval of an NHRI full-time Principal Investigator (PI) to serve as their advisor and guide them throughout the research program.

Program Types

NHRI Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program

  • Research Period: At least 60 days from July 1 to August 31 in the same year.
  • Research Fellowship: NT$ 12,000 per student. An income tax with an out-of-state rate will be deducted from all of the fellowships awarded to international students.
  • Summer Research Report contest: Students who receive the Fellowship should submit their Summer Research Reports. All the program participants are eligible to join the Summer Research Report Contest. The best three selected students will receive an NT$5,000 award each and a certificate of merit.

NHRI Undergraduate Student Project Research Program - from 2020

  • Research Period: At least three months from June 2 to September 30 in the same year. The research period can be extended if necessary.
  • Research Fellowship: NT$ 30,000 per student. An income tax with an out-of-state rate will be deducted from all of the fellowships awarded to international students.
  • To apply for this competitive research project, applicants should submit a project research proposal along with the program application form. There should be only one applicant involved in each proposal.
  • The topic and scope of the research project proposal should be original and consistent with the research expertises of the advisor.
  • The students who receive the Research Fellowship will be given priority for on-campus housing if needed.
  • Before the training closed, students who receive the Research Fellowship should submit a complete written study report, and give an oral presentation to the reviewers. The oral presentation can be in either Chinese or English.
  • Those who have misconducts involved in the violation of academic ethics and integrity in the conception, implementation, or presentation of the research plan will be subject to NHRI regulations on academic ethics and integrity.
  • For those approved research projects, no replacement is allowed, except in special cases which should be reported for approval during the project execution period. Students who are unable to continue the research project for some reason, and have to terminate the research projects, will receive the research fellowship in proportion to the execution period and have to return the remaining amount.
  • We encourage the students who do not receive the Research Fellowship can still take summer research program in NHRI as long as they have the approval from their NHRI advisors.

Application

Please obtain consent from an NHRI Principal Investigator (PI) to serve as your advisor. Then, contact the designated representative of the research unit (contact information provided in the attachment) and prepare the required documents for review.

  • Transcripts for All Semesters
  • Photocopy of Applicant's Bankbook (Taishin International Bank Account, Including Taishin Richart Online Banking)
  • Completed Student Declaration of No Full-time Work

Application period

Starting from April 1 to April 30, 2025. Applications will be accepted based on the time of receipt. Applications received after April 30, 2025, will not be included in the Research Fellowship review list.

Notes for Summer Short-Term Research Applications for Foreign Undergraduate Students (Enrolled in Overseas Universities)

  • Foreign students applying for the "Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program" must submit the "NHRI Foreign Undergraduate Student Summer Internship Application" form along with all required documents before April 7.
  • Only foreign undergraduate students (enrolled in overseas universities) may apply for an internship lasting at least 60 days, with a flexible start and end date within the period from June 2 to September 30.
    (For domestic students, the internship period is fixed from July 1 to August 31.)
  • Please select a lab of interest and contact the Principal Investigator (PI) via email, as internship opportunities are subject to the consent of an NHRI PI. Before proceeding, you must obtain consent from an NHRI PI to serve as your advisor. (NHRI Website: https://www.nhri.edu.tw/eng/)
  • After obtaining consent, contact the designated representative of the research unit (contact information provided in the attachment). Submit the "NHRI Foreign Undergraduate Student Summer Internship Application" form and prepare the required documents for review.
    Additionally, inform the representative which overseas ROC embassy or mission you plan to visit for your Taiwan visa application after May 12 (Monday).

  • After May 12 (Monday), in addition to your passport, identification, and other required documents, please bring the following two documents provided by NHRI to the overseas ROC embassy or mission to apply for your Taiwan visa:
    (1) the approval document from the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
    (2) the consent form for research and study by foreign students from the National Health Research Institutes.
  • Important Notice: To be eligible for the NHRI Research Fellowship, you must be currently enrolled as a student throughout the internship period. Both domestic and international undergraduate students receiving the fellowship must maintain their student status and must not have graduated. If a student is found to have lost their student status or has already graduated, they will be required to return the NHRI Research Fellowship.
