Director Hsing-Pang Hsieh selected as National Academy of Inventors Fellow

Dr. Hsing-Pang Hsieh, director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Research at the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), has been elected as a 2023 National Academy of Inventors (NAI) fellow.

Dr. Hsing-Pang Hsieh, a distinguished investigator, joined the Institute of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Research at the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) in 1998. Currently serving as the institute's director, he is passionately immersed in pioneering new drug discovery and development. With a remarkable record, Dr. Hsieh has authored 145 international papers, secured 64 patents domestically and internationally, and invented three cutting-edge anticancer candidates: the innovative microtubule inhibitor "DBPR104," the precision medicine targeting lung adenocarcinoma "DBPR112," and the multi-target kinase inhibitor for cancer "DBPR114." These groundbreaking drug candidates have seamlessly transitioned to leading domestic biotech companies, advancing through diverse stages of clinical trials.

Dr. Hsing-Pang Hsieh has amassed an impressive list of awards, including two-time Outstanding Research Awards from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the NHRI Outstanding Research Achievement Award, the Ming-Ning Wang Award, the Tien-Te Lee Outstanding Award, the TECO Award, the Chemical Technology Medal by the Chemical Society Located in Taipei, and the Lifetime Achievement of the International Outstanding Invention Award. Adding to the accolades, he has also won the National Invention and Creation Award, two-time MOST Future Tech Awards, and two-time National Innovation Awards. Dr. Hsieh’s academic performance also ranks in the top 2% of global scientists in the Lifetime Scientific Impact Ranking from 1960 to 2022.

"Innovative translational research plays a pivotal role in developing biopharmaceuticals in Taiwan. Transitioning from the laboratory to clinical trials necessitates the collaborative efforts of the entire team. Our team is sincerely thankful for the steadfast support from NHRI over the past 25 years, with special appreciation to former directors, Dr. Yu-Sheng Chao and Dr. Joe Shih. Their support has allowed us to pursue innovation and strive for excellence," said Dr. Hsieh.
The 2023 Fellow class hails from 118 research universities and governmental and non-profit research institutions worldwide. This class includes 89 individuals from the Association of American Universities (AAU) institutions and 128 individuals from R1 universities with very high research activity. Collectively, the 2023 Fellows hold over 4,600 issued U.S. patents. This year’s class includes 2 Nobel Laureates, 3 National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees, 22 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine members, and individuals holding other honors and distinctions as well as senior leadership from universities and research institutions. Their work spans disciplines and exemplifies their dedication and inspiration to translating research into commercial technologies that benefit society.

The National Academy of Inventors is a member organization comprising U.S. and international universities, governmental agencies, and non-profit research institutes. Since its inception in 2012, the NAI Fellows program has grown to include 1,898 exceptional researchers and innovators with over 63,000 U.S. patents and 13,000 licensed technologies. NAI Fellows are known for their inventions' societal and economic impact, contributing to major advancements in science and consumer technologies. Their innovations have generated over $3 trillion in revenue and created 1 million jobs. The 2023 class of Fellows will be honored and presented their medals by a senior United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) official at the NAI 13th Annual Meeting on June 18th, 2024, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
